The Old Wooden Toy

It was so many seasons ago
Since he gave her the old wooden toy
My mother was a young girl
My father just a boy
He told her it captured the fairies
And they would be bound to her wishes
She smiled and turned the key
And fell down to her knees

I looked into her old eyes
But she did not look back unto me
There was no sense of knowing
Just raw uncertainty
As she rocked in her rickety chair
She would reach up and play with her hair
She thought I did not notice
That she hid an old key there

I had never known my father
And mother only would speak in her sleep
She told me bedtime stories
As she walked with him in dreams
Walked with him in dreams
Then early one morn she embraced me
As she pressed an old toy to my chest
I smiled and turned the key
